Some Musings On The First Week of College Football

Just a brief thought on yesterday's college football...

Oklahoma losing to BYU doesn't equal a massive upset. I'd argue that it doesn't even represent an upset. The so-called sports experts really need to pay more attention to the so-called mid-major football conferences, especially the Mountain West and the WAC. Teams like BYU, Utah, Boise State, and TCU have proven over the past five years or so that, on any given Saturday, they can beat any team from any conference. And just because the BCS doesn't recognize these conferences doesn't mean that the media should keep ignoring them either.

I was really, really, really hoping that Navy would find a way to end up prevailing over Ohio State. We all know what's going to happen now. Ohio State will find a way to make it through the Big 1011 and end up playing in either a BCS bowl or playing for the national championship, and once again it will get its ass kicked. I'm sure USC will beat Ohio State next week, but as we've learned in seasons past, Ohio State losing to USC does nothing to harm Ohio State's chances. But a loss to Navy, then to USC would have put Ohio State out of our misery for this season.

Alas, it was not to be.

Despite my bad seat in the press box, it was fun making the UH game as a member of the media. The UH was really impressive in the first half, then seemed to dial it down in the second. Coach Kevin Sumlin wasn't totally pleased with the team's effort, and he noted afterwards that some of the problem came from mixing and matching the units. The good news was that a lot of the kids got to get some major playing time, including phenom A.J. Dujat who was just cleared by the NCAA about two weeks ago. But the most impressive freshman was running back Chris Sims who had over a 100 yards in receptions and two TD in the first half.

I'm really looking forward to watching next week's game with Oklahoma State on my TV.
